Hacienda Luisita, Tarlac
The Aquino Center in Tarlac is maintained by the Benigno Aquino Jr. Foundation to showcase the legacy of the late senator and his widow, former President Corazon Aquino. Apart from a convention center and a museum to house the Aquino memorabilia, the center will eventually become the home of the People Power Institute, a non government organization dedicated to promoting the concepts of popular democracy and civil society.
The compound consists of three main structures: the convention center, the museum and the tower, all of which were designed in a distinctive contemporary Filipino style around a spacious courtyard with landscaped gardens. Built of granite, anodized aliminum and glass, the center's structures express traditional design lines in contemporary terms. The main building, for instance, is capped with a split roof that follows familiar lines while boldly departing from tradition with its central skylight and extended ridge. Extended eaves are supported by tukod branch branch out of the main posts, as in many ancestral houses.
The play of light, in fact, serves as a unifying theme in the three main structures. The main hall of the convention center, for instance, is bounded by walls that consist mainly of glass window panels in an inverted U-shape. Together with the transparent main doors and the vertical skylight, the windows illuminate the interior while providing a visual link with the landscaped courtyard and the other buildings. Cantilevered lattice eaves along the exterior walls filter out the harshest rays of the sun, preventing the buildup of heat while still allowing light in. Structural posts are expressed in the interior, and a woven rattan ceiling provides a contrast in both color and texture from the predominant off-white tones.
